As many of you know my Lady Hugs died this summer on July 17th . We were best friends for 14.5 years and that is a long time . . . but wasn’t nearly long enough. It goes without saying, but I miss her so very much.
Several years ago, I had a staircase made especially for her as she needed help getting on my bed . . . due to severe hip dysplsia. The staircase fit perfectly between the wall and my bed, probably about 22’ wide. Lady Hugs certainly deserved a mahogany or cherry staircase with plush carpeting and the finest finishing nails with diamonds or Swarovski final touches at a minimum!
Though, however the staircase was made out of plywood and was nearly 75” long and sloping and beautiful in its own right! There were seven steps . . . each with a lift of 4” (I thought this would help her; but looking back a typical stair height minus an inch would have been perfect) . The top step created a 24” platform that was helpful for making my bed. And the carpet was trimmed blue carpet squares that did not match my room; but it was absolutely perfect as it assisted Lady Hugs.
Lady Hugs hadn’t used the staircase since early in January of this year. One morning in March she woke me up. She suprized me as, I heard her walk beyond my bed to the staircase and she trotted up the stairs like she had for so many years. She was on a mission that morning and it was like she hadn’t missed a day, ever. Those paw-steps were a symphony to my ears; how I missed her presence. And she even completed her multiple nesting circles and then plopped down beside me. I absolutely loved when she would snuggle next to me. Little did I know that it would be the last time she used her staircase on her own.
Well, the staircase was long and awkward and I could not move it without some assistance. I had scheduled to have my carpets cleaned recently. I shared with the carpet cleaning team why I would like the staircase moved into the garage. I was so very grateful and they went above and beyond the call of duty.
BTW, for those living in Macomb, Oakland , St. Clair and Wayne Counties in Michigan, I used Burg Custom Cleaning who did an absolutely beautiful job on my carpets. They even let me apply an essential oil based cleaner. May I say absolutely awesome job on all accounts. In addition, the Boaz and Bootsie would be free to walk around and I didn’t have to be concerned about locking them up till the carpet was dry.
That evening, I realized that Boaz & Bootsie were going to miss the stairs. They would use the stairs many times each day to assist them in to getting on the window sill and enjoy the view whether it was day or night. And when they were done they may bolt to any other window in our home so they wouldn’t miss any action!! Now that the stairs were gone . . . how were they going to get to the window sill with vertical blinds that went below the sill?
Oh dear, what was I going to do the accommodate them! The next morning I realized I had the perfect remedy. I have a taller wrought iron chair that has a cushion seat that I wanted to relocated. It would provide a perfect landing spot with one leap . . . to then allow them to maneuver in cat like fashion onto the window sill. Mission accomplished!
I don’t know what I’ll do with the magnificent and memorable staircase, aside from storing it for the time being. But it certainly brought back many special memories of my beloved Lady Hugs.
